The Church of Saint George the Victorious in Alanya is located 10 km from the center of the resort. The Orthodox church stands on a hill overlooking the sea, and nearby there is a healing source, which since ancient times has given pure drinking water.
History and Renovation
Alanya Church of Saint George — According to legend, Saint George protected the village from robbers who threatened the locals. The Church of Saint George the Victorious in Alanya was built in the 8th century, and from the 13th century a male monastery was erected nearby. In 1873 the church was completed. But for a long time it was in a deserted state. And only in 2015 was the reconstruction of the temple carried out. After that, it literally came to life. Now cultural events and worship are held here by Christians. Among them is the liturgy, which takes place on the first Sunday of every month.
Interior and Atmosphere
Inside the temple, the internal slatted wooden vault and the cliros with an eight-pointed colorful star are well preserved, on which the painting of the artist is still visible. When you get here, you are transported to the distant past and it seems that what happened here centuries ago happened yesterday.
How to Get to the Church
To the Church of Saint George the Victorious in Alanya you can get on minibuses No. 5 and No. 7, which go from the city center. Get off at the Tepe Mahallesi settlement at the school stop. Then, go around the 3-story pink school on the left side and go up the road to the Hidir Ilyas sign. Go in this direction for about 2.5 km to the crossroads. There you will see the temple.
